National Shortage of IV Fluids

10/14/2024

PEIA is aware of the national shortage and conservation of IV fluids due to the temporary shutdown of Baxter International, a manufacturing facility in North Carolina. The facility was forced to close its North Cove, North Carolina, plant due to heavy flooding caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The plant is a major producer of various types of sterile fluids that are given intravenously. The rapid loss of supply has also affected personal protective equipment similar to the pandemic. Elective surgeries may be postponed over the next few months until supply is replenished. The FDA is working to temporarily import products that are in short supply to help meet patient needs.
